Virtual Web Hosting

Virtual Web Hosting FAQ

What is virtual web hosting?

Virtual webhosting refers to the process of running multiple ‘virtual' web servers on a single physical host computer. Virtual server hosting uses this technique to have a single computer host thousands of independent web sites. Virtual hosting can allow for better manageability, efficiency and scalability of a service infrastructure.

Most virtual web hosting applications rely on virtual DNS resolution. This makes is possible for a specific domain name to be associated with each independent virtual web server. This can be done with either name-based or IP based virtual web hosting.

What is name-based hosting?

Name-based web hosting is a technique that can be used when providing virtual web hosting services. Each hosted single machine shares a single public IP address All requests are answered according to the domain name supplied by the client. This is how the different virtual sites are distinguished from each other.

What is IP-based web hosting?

IP-based hosting is a technique that is used to provide virtual web hosting services. Each web site is hosted on a single machine and given its own separate public IP address. The requests are then resolved with the IP address as opposed to the domain name. Operating systems can limit the maximum number of IP addresses that can be assigned to a single machine, especially when separate log files are being used.
